Here are some tips I have for you on how I prepared and made sure I was actually cut out to be a private tutor.

1. Figure out the grade and subject you want to teach.

They should be subjects you ideally got an A for (because most of the time they ask for your results) and are familiar in enough up till today. You have to know your own limits because as a private tutor, you are theoretically meant to be able to answer and grasp 100% of the syllabus for that grade. For example, I know for a fact that I am incapable to teach Alevels/JC despite getting As for some subjects because I cannot remember much from those times. Hence, the highest level I am currently teaching would be Olevels.

2. Test yourself by trying out free exam papers you can find online. Do the WHOLE PPR and preferably the END OF YEAR exam paper so that it covers all concepts.

Or Study/ attempt your own textbooks if you kept them.

If you're unable to do the qns, refer to the answer sheet, the bare minimum is for you to UNDERSTAND what the answer sheet says and how and why it is being solved that way. (Esp for Math)

If not, go and study lmaoooo and figure out the concepts/ method.

3. Knowledgeable =/= teach well

This is the biggest deal breaker because being knowledgeable does not mean you can teach well. I have come across many of my friends who are super intelligent but are just simply unable to explain in words the way they solve the qns. It's as if their mind works in it's own way and that's VERY COMMON. So you need to be able to explain it in a way other ppl can understand and put your thoughts into words. It is either innate or comes with practice!

👉🏼 Try teaching out loud to yourself or imagine there's someone beside you and explain the question to them. This forces you to phrase your thoughts into words. Sounds dumb but it works and you will realise how easy/hard it can be.

👉🏼Try teaching your younger siblings or cousins their homework and see how they respond to you.

👉🏼 There are free tutoring platforms on google for tutors to provide free tutoring services for underprivileged students that cannot afford the fees. This is a good platform for you to try tutoring and see if it something you can commit to long term. This leads to my 4th qn you should ask yourself.

4. Can you Commit for a minimum of 1 year?

Once you decide to take up the student, you need to ensure you will be able to commit the entire year because it is quite inconsiderate to ditch them halfway and have them scrambling to find someone else before their midterm exams or something. So consider your future plans first before you decide to become a private tutor!!
