My recent post on alcohol-free activities gained quite a bit of traction, so I thought I’d share why I decided to quit alcohol in the first place! A lot of my friends were really quite surprised by my decision, and I was even met with some resistance (which disappointed me a lot). I personally feel that my quality of life is better for that decision, and my mood is significantly better - so it matters less to me that other people aren’t supportive. ANYWAY enough of a rant: this is why I quit alcohol ❌🍾

1. DAMPENS PERFORMANCE 🏋🏻‍♀️

Alcohol inhibits the function of hormones that help with the repair of exercise induced muscle damage, as well as the building of muscular adaptations from your practice. It also prolongs your recovery period, meaning if you train every single day, you’re less likely to be able to develop the necessary motor skills and muscle memory to perform at your 100% in your sport.

2. TAKES AWAY FROM MOMENTS FOR CONNECTION WITH FRIENDS 👯‍♀️

My days are long and my body is usually under fatigue from my training. Alcohol exacerbates these feelings of fatigue SIGNIFICANTLY for me, and I either fall asleep or completely zone out from conversation. I noticed that this got in the way of my relationships with the people around me, and in a bid to be more present with the limited time I have with them I just decided not to drink anymore.

3. INHIBITS MUSCLE GROWTH AND RECOVERY 💪🏻

Ever feel suuuuuuper achy after a long night out? That’s because alcohol suppresses muscle protein synthesis. even when adequate protein is being consumed. IN FACT - it’s been proven that alcohol not only suppresses muscle growth, it CAUSES muscle atrophy! I just felt super tired and I wasn’t making any progress with my workouts and decided to quit.

4. EXACERBATES SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION 😢

Alcohol is a depressant - even though you might feel great during a drinking sesh, you probably feel like trash the day after. I wanted to avoid this entirely because it just gets in the way of life.
