- Read-Aloud: Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht
- Anchor Chart + Markers
- Jack-o'-Lantern Template (or let students draw!)
- Writing Paper + Construction Paper
๐จ Steps:
- Read the book aloud, ask questions, and discuss how to pick and carve a pumpkin!
- Relate the steps in the story to Procedural Text ๐
- Teach the elements of procedural writing using an anchor chart.
- Partner Talk: What steps would you follow to pick or carve a pumpkin?
- Activity: Write a procedural text on โHow to Pick a Pumpkinโ or โHow to Carve a Jack-o'-Lantern!โ
- Brainstorm steps, transition words, and action verbs as a class.
- Let students draft, edit, and publish their writing, adding a pumpkin drawing for extra fun!
๐ก Tips & Differentiation:
- Use word mats with key transition/action words.
- Adjust the number of steps: 3 or 4!
- Offer small group support for guided writing or modeling.
- Provide sentence starters for younger students.
