In medieval times,

the myth of the unicorn was born.

The unicorn represented purity, innocence, and eternal life. The creature was often associated with Christ,

and with that, restoration of Eden was interwoven with its lore.

In The Last Unicorn, Amalthea is a caretaker over her own Eden. When she finds out from a butterfly that she is the very last guardian of nature, she leaves behind her home to find where her kin have gone.

Along the way she encounters many people and creatures and sees how the absence of the unicorns has led to corruption. Brokenness creates broken hearts, and her travel companions are no strangers to it. When the unicorn approaches, Molly bursts into tears,

crying “How dare you show up now, when I’m like

THIS, and not when I was a child, full of innocence!”

The presence of purity often has this effect on those who feel stained by the world.

As the journey continues, the trio encounters the Red Bull. In a state of panic, the wizard-in-training turns Amalthea into a woman. Shocked at this sudden change, she crumples into a ball, describing the experience of this new form like death surrounding her. She can feel immortality slip out of her grip, and the fragility of human life settle in her spirit. It’s more than she can bare.

As Amalthea looses her sense of self,

she finds solace in the self of another.

Forgetting the immortality she

previously had, she chooses a life of mortality

with the one she’s fallen for.

But then she’s met with a fork in the road when the Red Bull appears. Will she stay a human and let the unicorns stay captive? Or will she turn back, letting what could have been go free? It’s a hard decision where choosing just one would feel right and wrong.

Seeing how no one is a match for the Red Bull,

Amalthea has no choice. She turns back into a unicorn, wards off the Red Bull, and revives her fallen beloved. With the battle won and unicorns free,

all is restored to how it should be.

But not entirely for her.

Amalthea learns a lesson she’ll never forget.

Love is worth every sacrifice in the world,

even if it means you don’t get what you want in the end.

Love is worth letting go, even when you want to hold on. Love is worth fighting for, even when you want to give up.

Love is worth it all.
