I get this question a lot from pre-meds on the internet so i figured i would answer this question! Why did I choose to become a medical doctor and not a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant (associate).
I would also like to say that this post is not to say anything negative about the NP or PA fields. My mother is a nurse practitioner and i have so much respect for NP’s and PA’s.
What it comes down to is a lot of the reasons why people choose NP or PA, don't resonate with me. for example I know some people who say that the years of training to become a medical doctor are too long, but for me I'm a nerd at heart so I'm okay with being a student for a long time.
I did think that the fact that PA's could switch Specialties was exciting, but thinking about it further I think realistically I wouldn't switch Specialties that much. I'm the type of person who wants to become an expertise in one topic and I don't want to have to keep starting over .
I'm not sure if I want to open up my own private practice, and I'm aware that NPS are able to do that in certain States, But I just believe that becoming a doctor gives me more options and opportunities to do that as well.
If you're struggling to decide which specialty is for you I recommend shadowing all of them because they have different roles and responsibilities.
