Not only is it so much fun, but coming up with a family mission statement can solidify your core values and strengthen your home and family! When it comes to homeschool, we often focus on curriculum choices, learning styles, and academic milestones… but what if we could weave something even more profound into their education? Enter the ✨family mission statement✨: a powerful tool that can strengthen your family, increase your children’s emotional intelligence, AND encourage healthy communication.

To get right to the point, a family mission statement is a brief declaration of your collective values, purpose, and goals that you create together as a team. It contains the principles you hold most dear, as well as the legacy you want to leave behind. An example of a family mission statement is: “We are a family that values kindness, respect, and faith. We strive to support one another in our personal growth, communicate openly, and show love in all that we do. Together, we seek to make a positive impact on our community and the world.”

Once the family mission statement is written, the real fun begins. I wanted to take mine a step further and incorporate it into our daily routine by reading it every morning at breakfast, so I chose 12 core values for our family and assigned each one to a month! We focus on one a month and I came up with 4 quotes or scriptures for each value – or one for each week. By the time a year is done my kids will have 48 empowering scriptures and quotes memorized!!

Here are a few more ways to incorporate your family mission statement into your homeschool:

Literature Connection

Select books that incorporate the values of your mission statement. Pay attention to the characters and discuss how they demonstrate (or fail to demonstrate) your family’s values.

Historical Figure Study

Research historical figures who embodied values from your mission statement, and analyze how these values influenced their decisions and impact on their community.

Real-World Application Challenges

Create weekly challenges related to your mission statement values. For example: If “kindness” is a value, challenge everyone to perform a daily act of kindness everyday for that week.

Character Trait of the Week

Highlight a specific character trait from your mission statement each week. Provide examples, discuss its importance, and look for ways to practice it.

Mission Statement Art

Create visual representations of your mission statement values then display these around your home/learning space as constant reminders.

Community Service Aligned with Values

Choose volunteer opportunities that align with your mission statement, then reflect on how these experiences relate to your family values.

Role-Playing Exercises

Act out scenarios that challenge children to apply mission statement values

Discuss different choices and their alignment with your family values

Value-Based Field Trips

Plan outings that reinforce aspects of your mission statement. For example: Visit a local charity if “giving back” is a core value, or an art museum if “creativity” is a core value.
