Being a good manager, especially in a busy environment like running two bars, requires a balance of leadership, communication, and organization. Here are some key strategies that can help in any management setting:

1. Lead by Example:

- Why: Your employees will look to you for guidance, so setting a good example in terms of work ethic, professionalism, and behavior is essential.

- How: Be punctual, stay calm under pressure, and show that you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and work alongside your team when needed.

2. Communicate Effectively:

- Why: Clear communication prevents misunderstandings and keeps everyone on the same page.

- How: Regularly update your staff on goals, expectations, and feedback. Make sure they feel comfortable coming to you with concerns. Use a mix of formal meetings and informal check-ins.

3. Delegate Smartly:

- Why: You can’t do everything yourself, and empowering your staff by giving them responsibilities fosters trust and skill development.

- How: Assign tasks based on each employee’s strengths and growth areas. Trust them to handle their duties, but always be available for guidance if needed.

I will eventually be posting about 10 bullet points, but do any of you have any management advice that has really helped you?

I am coming up on celebrating my third year of managing two bars, and I’ve recently had a couple people suggest that I should share some of my management tips!

It can be especially frustrating managing two bars in a college town, but I’ve learned to trust the process of hiring, training, and potentially firing or separating ways if things don’t work out.

One of the most recent and interesting changes I’ve experienced, though, is the transition from friend/coworker/manager to Manager. Capital M on purpose. I am very lucky that this is the first school year in my bar management career where our staff has more than doubled in two months. We’re getting new life into these neighborhood bars and it’s really motivating to the staff and myself.
