How can your birth affect your relationship?

From personal experience and also supporting many couples as a doula. I’ve witnessed marriages and relationships strengthen and also have watched them totally crumble soon after the birth of their child, and it sucks quite honestly…

I tell couples it’s great to really try to discuss the hard things BEFORE they get try to conceive but I know sometimes pregnancies are not planned, so you gotta try and talk through things in healthy way during pregnancy.

PREPARE for the birth, both mom and dad need to educate themselves. I see so often the women doing all this research and learning and the dad is just like “whatever I’ll just show up it will be fine” and then they look like a dear in headlights OR they just disassociate and get on their phones the whole birth, which ABSOLUTELY causes justified resentment from the woman.

My pregnancies and birth brought up some things for sure my husband and I needed to work through BUT he showed up consistently during pregnant, birth, and postpartum. He LISTENED and trusted in what I wanted. He took time to educate himself on birth and how he could be a good birth partner and that meant the world! It made me feel so love and respected and that for us off on the right foot after both birth experiences.

Birth trauma can also impact a couple, so its good to discuss how you both handle things, have a good support system (highly recommend a doula) and discuss how to communicate with medical staff in case you (mom) isn’t able to because you are in the thick of labor.
