How to get started

Hello lovelies!!

I can’t even believe it, but I’m coming up on my 16 year anniversary of teaching piano 🤯

Not only did teaching support me financially through college, but it has been the absolute best job for its flexibility and setting my own rates and schedule. I’m a firm believer that everyone has skills good enough to share with others, and hey! If you can make some extra $$$ while doing it, why not?? 🥰

If this intrigues you, I learned a lot along the way, and here are some tips for getting started. (These can be applied to any instrument as well!)

1) Assess your own skills and knowledge.

Make sure you have a good understanding of the piano and music theory. If you need to brush up on your skills, consider taking lessons yourself or reading books and articles on piano teaching.

2) Decide what kind of teacher you want to be.

Do you want to teach private lessons, group lessons, or online lessons? Do you want to teach beginners, intermediate students, or advanced students? Do you want to focus on a particular genre of music, such as classical, jazz, or pop?

3) Find a teaching space.

If you are teaching private lessons, you will need a space where you and your student can comfortably sit and play the piano. If you are teaching group lessons, you will need a larger space that can accommodate multiple students.

4) Set your rates.

Consider your experience, the type of lessons you are offering, and the cost of living in your area when setting your rates. I charge $100 per month as a reference.

5) Market your services.

Once you are ready to start teaching, you need to let people know about your services. I sent around flyers in my neighborhood when I started. You can also put up advertisements in music stores, and start posting about it on social media. Word of mouth is king, so be sure to tell your family and friends 🥰
