I have lived here for 5 years & I learned pretty quickly that a vast majority here are nothing more than tourist traps. Here is my list of places to avoid to save you some time & money.

#1 Hollywood Wax Museum. The wax figures are HORRENDOUS & nothing compared to Madame Tussauds.

#2 Broadway at the Beach. While it is cool to walk around, grab a bite to eat & shop, maybe ride some rides... It is EXTREMELY gimmicky & every store is overpriced. Same with the restaurants. Not to mention all the restaurants there are very subpar food wise.

#3 The outlets. We have 2 outlets here and both of them offer different stores. Tbh, they all sell things at the same prices as any store in the mall. I avoid them just for this reason.

#4 Barefoot Landing. Same thing as Broadway at the Beach, just up in North Myrtle. Overpriced, touristy places to eat & stores. Greg Norman's Steakhouse is there & I will admit its pretty good even though it is EXPENSIVE. Steaks are 40+ a piece & sides are all a la cart.

#5 Any of the beach stores. Overpriced, gimmicky stuff. Once you have gone to one you have gone to them all. Except the Gay Dolphin. That one is its own entity.

#6 Anything Ripleys. Including the aquarium. Not worth the price, TRUST ME.

#7 The Funplex. Yeah sure it looks like a tiny little carnival. But for the price it is not worth it. It is really tiny & really doesnt have much to offer.

#8 This one is really important. Avoid hotels/resorts that arent big names. They might entice you with "pictures" online or the fact they have a lazy river, or waterpark etc. But Myrtle Beach has a huge problem with lousy resorts & hotels tricking people thinking they are getting a clean & safe hotel. For some reason the city isn't really doing anything about this. Bedbugs have been a major issue here & there are so many lawsuits being filed/have been filed over unkempt hotels. So many motels have been shutdown due to not being up to code. Do yourself a favor & please do your research. Stick to the Marriotts & Hiltons. It might be more expensive but there brand is solid & you know you will be happy with your stay.
