How I Budget in NYC

As a recent post-grad and new NYC-transplant, I am constantly astounded by the prices in the city, and I'm constantly looking for ways to cut my costs whenever/wherever I can.

It's going to be different for everyone, but here are 5 tips that have helped me budget and save a bit of money since moving to NYC :) Also feel free to drop your money-budgeting recs in the comments below !!!

1. Make a realistic monthly budget with sections for a.) rent/utilities b.) groceries/necessities c.) fun things/wants d.) debt or loan payments if applicable e.) savings — a small amount each month is better than none each month f.) any subscriptions/regular payments you have

2. Walking, taking a subway or renting a citibike > taking an uber/lyft unless necessary

3. Make a list of recipe ideas/meal plan for the week so that you don't over-spend at the grocery store

4. If you can, set aside the money you need for rent each month as soon as it's available to you. I have a separate "apartment savings" account where I add my rent/utilities when I have them readily expendable

5. Don't be afraid to say "no" to plans if they're going to cost more than you'd like to spend! Suggest to cook at home, go for a walk, or attend a free event/museum/park in the city
