My overseas internship experience! 😍🇹🇭

hi besties! i had a super fulfilling internship which lasted from last year’s (2022) sept to this year’s (2023) feb in Bangkok, Thailand & it has been one of the MOST enriching moment of my life. thought I’ll share a lil on what i have gained from this overseas internship & what to expect for people who are planning to go for an overseas exchange / internship soon! 😉🥰

a lil bg on how i landed my overseas internship opportunity… i was vvv lucky to have my internship placed in the second sem (while i had my fyp during my first sem!) due to covid r&r, they started opening up their borders during the second sem & hence only students who have their internship placed in their second sem would b given a chance to apply for an overseas internship. (So yes we r VERY lucky!! 🍀)

since sg has j started to reopen their borders during that time, many students & their families were v paranoid about travelling to another country (bc of how the pandemic was still ongoing) but thankfully, my family was very supportive of me wanting to try out overseas internship!! they gave me their fullest support & i LITERALLY only applied for this internship bc i badly wanted it HAHAHA 🫠👍🏻 somehow my heart n mind was j telling me to go for it bc im gna b experiencing one of the most amazing time of my life & so i did! 😜

1. Making new friends 👯🥰

making new friends in a foreign country is inevitable + we had people from diff faculties joining us on this internship hence, staying together at the same place allow us to forge closer bonds 😝

they are the people who will stay w u for the next 5 months ish so it’s very important to maintain good relations within one another !!! 😙

2. Exploring places within the country 🇹🇭

we had opportunities to travel to places within the country for excursions/work such as to Phetchaburi, Kamphaeng Phet, Pattaya, Ayutthaya & many more.

since we were based in Bangkok, we had so much fun travelling out of the area and to places which are not as widely known as bkk!

def v eye-opening experience to see another side of Thailand & appreciate the beauty of it’s nature & architecture, one of the reasons why I love my internship hehehe 🌊🌿

3. Learning new language & culture 🌼

working in Thailand = mandatory to learn a lil thai language 🤩 we had Thai language classes for a week which taught us basic thai that is essential to help us survive for the next few months in Thailand! I would recommend learning a lil of their language before travelling there so that you’ll be able to understand and communicate with the people in Thailand better! 😃

getting into their culture means participating in activities which represents Thailand! One of the many popular activities among the Thais is the Songkran water festival but our internship duration wasn’t during the period of the festival hence we didn’t get the chance to exp Songkran in its own country :( but thankfully we had the chance to take part in doing Loy Krathong!

Loy Krathong is a Thai festival (usually held in Nov) celebrated to show respect to the water spirits. during this day, the thais gather around the lake and make a wish before launching the Krathong into the lake! & yes we got to exp it too! 😍👍🏻

4. Learning to be independent 🧍🏻‍♀️

being overseas alone meant that i have to take responsibility for myself, all of my actions & decisions. that being said, there were many things that i have to decide on my own.

i tried Muay Thai by signing up for their classes (which is one of thailand’s popular sports) + would occasionally go to a 24hr gym w my friends! however, i fell sick a few times (probably due to the weather + my bad lifestyle oops) you rly gotta depend on urself / ur friends ard you for help when you’re terribly ill man 🫠 b sure to bring lots of medication over so that you’ll not have to go thru a hassle to get meds when u urgently need it!

oh & also doing weekly laundry was enjoyable if you’re doing it w your friends but it also becomes a chore that has to be done every week! btw there r lots of portable laundry here n there in bkk! but it gets tiring having to walk from our accoms to the laundry place while carrying all of our dirty clothes but no choice 😮‍💨😮‍💨

5. Making memorable memories 🤩

apart from all the ups & downs that you’ll face during your internship overseas, it all boils down to making the most out of it! bruh you’ll never be (at that age) and doing it again!! one advice would b to never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone!

you’ll learn a lot about yourself while living independently and being in a foreign country. I’ve learnt alot thru my own experiences, challenges & also from the new friendships which I’ve forged thru this internship! I highly recommend you to give it a shot bc you’ll never know what good comes from it!

even tho it’s been more than half a year since I’m back from my overseas internship, I still think about all the fun times I’ve had there & would always miss the life I used to have 😭😭 it took me more than a month to adjust back into my life in sg again but urgh would 10/10 do it again!
