Elements of a Coastal Home

Here are some of my favorite ways to create a coastal home, but not have a “beach house” theme. The key is in keeping things relaxed and understated, with quiet nods to the coast.

-Light Wood Tones : All of the furniture in our home is light wood or white-washed, reflecting the tone of driftwood, which is found on the beach. We even had our oak floors sanded down and bleached to make them lighter in color.

-Coastal Art : I bought serene pictures of the California coastline on Etsy and then printed and framed them to hang on our walls. Whenever you look at them, you see beautiful, calming, coastal views.

-Woven Cane Furniture : Having a few pieces of woven cane furniture is a great way to bring in touches of “beachy” furniture without overdoing it. Our console table and dining chairs both have woven cane accents.

-Surfboard/Skimboard : Lean a bright colored surfboard against the wall for a fun pop of color or even mount a skimboard or skateboard on the wall in a kid’s room.

-Tropical Plants : Choose plants that grow in the tropics, such as Dracaena, Philodendron, Palm, Pothos, or Fiddle Leaf Fig.

-White/Neutral Textiles : Choose white or natural linen for bed sheets, slipcovers, and even throw pillows.
