AS PROMISED… here’s the follow up to my previous post ✌️ If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already seen Brad Mondo’s viral TikTok and YouTube Butterfly Cut tutorials… but is it really that easy?

After cutting my own hair, this is my verdict: it’s a very forgiving style to attempt by yourself at home, with amazing results, and if you’re at all thinking about it - PLEASE, 𝘿𝙄𝙔 𝙄𝙏. Infinite bragging rights ✌️

Here’s my experience attempting it as a total hairstyle noob, and the very important lessons I learnt (which I feel no one really emphasised on enough). If you’re DIYing it, this is the post to read!

❇️𝕊𝕥𝕒𝕣𝕥 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕝𝕖𝕟𝕘𝕥𝕙 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕨𝕒𝕟𝕥

I didn’t highlight this in my pictures above because this is pre-cut prep. Basically, this style is SO good at maintaining length that you’re not going to get your hair to a short length, if that’s what you want. I didn’t realise this to begin with (or maybe didn’t believe it, cuz I cut my hair 10 inches off and I was like “that has to make a difference, right? WRONG) so I only adjusted it after 💀If you’re totally on your own you can bring it to the front of your shoulders and snip it evenly from there, but your best bet is to get someone to make sure it’s a good even length from the back view (hair behind shoulders).

1️⃣𝕎𝕠𝕣𝕜 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕕𝕒𝕞𝕡 𝕙𝕒𝕚𝕣

By which I mean WET HAIR. Don’t take a shower, but don’t be stingy with the water either - it dries up quickly, so you’re going to need some sort of spray on hand (yes, I used a pressure plant watering spray. DON’T JUDGE ME). My hair was so SUPER long that managing it was difficult, and if It wasn’t drenched there’s no way I could have completed this. Comb through before you start - tangles are not your friends.

2️⃣𝔾𝕖𝕥 𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕡 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕡𝕠𝕟𝕪𝕥𝕒𝕚𝕝𝕤

The first step is to separate your hair into two ponies - one in front of your forehead, and one above the head. Please watch the tutorials I linked for a visual, but here are some tips to take note of:

> The ponytail separation is from BEHIND one ear to BEHIND the other ear.

> The pony in front of the face looks different from the wolf cut - don’t be confused, follow the tutorials.

> The pony at the back must be at the TOP of the head

> Make sure the line across is as straight as possible - this requires mirrors, checking in your camera OR help - and I suggest this last option. I spent more than an hour getting my ponies right, because my hair was sooo long (waist length) and difficult to wrangle. I literally had to take a break LOL

3️⃣𝕌𝕤𝕖 𝕒𝕟 𝕚𝕥𝕖𝕞 𝕒𝕤 𝕒 𝕝𝕖𝕟𝕘𝕥𝕙 𝕘𝕦𝕚𝕕𝕖𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕖

Once you get your ponytails, use an item to determine the length you want to cut off. This is important for two reasons - it’ll allow you to cut the same length off the front and back (IMPT) and it takes the guesswork out of measurements. It’s a lot less finicky then using a ruler and trying to look at the correct number. Trust me on this.

ALSO, when you’re cutting the back pony, try to measure the length while it’s straight up. Pulling it forward or to the side will affect layer length - I STRUGGLED bc my hair is waist length, but just get an idea and you can neaten it up later.

ALSO ALSO when you’re cutting, don’t just do straight one BLIP across. You can do that about 1cm from the desired length, then cut vertically (snip upwards) to get rid of that last cm so it’s not too gaudishly straight across.

4️⃣𝕋𝕒𝕜𝕖 𝕥𝕦𝕣𝕟𝕤 𝕥𝕠 𝕝𝕖𝕥 𝕖𝕒𝕔𝕙 𝕤𝕚𝕕𝕖 𝕕𝕠𝕨𝕟 𝕥𝕠 𝕥𝕣𝕚𝕞

I know you’re tempted to let it down and see the final result IMMEDIATELY, but HOLD BACK THE RIVER. You’re gonna let down the front FIRST, join the ends, and make any adjustments, tie it back up, THEN do the same with the back. This is going to help you to keep that separation line CONSISTENT - in case you decide you want to take away more length etc, you still have the same ponies to work with.

❇️𝕂𝕖𝕖𝕡 𝕒𝕥 𝕚𝕥

After you let it all down, you’ll find bits over the next couple days that you’ll want to snip off or that you realise are unbalanced. Heck, I dyed my entire head and then cut off another good 2 or more inches because I realised it was still too long. That’s okay! The beauty of this haircut is, it’s so layered, 𝙣𝙤 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨. It all just blends in beautifully.

That’s it girlies!! It really is just three steps (pony-snip-trim) but these tips are what I learnt while doing it for myself, and I hope it’s helpful to you too 💖
