1. Surround yourself with people that love you. This does NOT have to be a boyfriend, in fact, sometimes a boyfriend doesn’t even qualify. Surround yourself with people who want the best for you, not people you think are cool. If these two overlap, awesome. Friends should be supportive of you, friendly, fun to be around. If a friendship or relationship isn’t serving you well, leave.

2. Rewire your brain. Make a list of the things that make you happy. How many of those things are good for you? How many of them are hurting you? How many things are you holding onto that don’t make you happy anymore? Let it go. You have no obligation to hold onto anything that no longer serves you. You do not owe the past loyalty. Look up how to retrain your brain. Form healthy habits.

3. Stop listening to sad music. Now this one sucks because sad music is sooo good. BUT. Too much sad music causes rumination. Rumination = ruined mood. Sad music can teach your brain to be sad more often, to further push your depression, and to ruin the good moods you DO have. I heard this one a million times, and I ignored, ignored, ignored it until I started recovering. It really does help.

4. Start a journal. This one literally changed my life. Writing out how you feel feels so good. You can always destroy the pages if they’re too honest. Also the journal is so good to track your mental health and to help doctors appointments or therapy.

5. Go outside. Studies show that a lack of nature in your life can actually worsen depression, and anxiety.

6. Allow yourself to feel something. Pushing down your emotions is doing nothing for you. It does not serve you. Get rid of it. Allow yourself to cry. Allow yourself to feel happy without thinking of the end.

7. Eat. Starving yourself doesn’t help anyone in the world. It ruins your mental health, your relationships with others and your relationship with yourself.
