You definitely don’t want to miss this spectacular, once in a lifetime experience to see this world event. If you ever have the chance to plan a trip that coincides with the event dates, definitely do so!

❓Why Taiwan?

There are other countries that host similar events but I chose Taiwan because I simply love the country and the vibes~ Since the event occurs during the end of Chinese New Year, the winter weather is also chilly 🥶, instead of a hot one. 😂

✨ Here are my own tips and tricks that you should know, and have up your sleeve before planning a trip there 🫡

1. Choose the right location 📍

In this 2023 year of the Taiwan Lantern Festival, there were 2 locations that held the festival. One in Shi Fen (十分) and one in Pingxi Junior High School (a more mountainous area, and much harder to get to). You should definitely choose an accessible location, and most of the years they should have one of the location at least at Shi Fen (十分)- so definitely choose this!

2. Getting there 🚗

There are many transport options to get there and if you’re taking a train just like I did (as it’s the most fuss-free way) you should check up on the train schedule on the Taiwan Railway App (台鐵e訂通) so you do not waste too much time wasting while changing trains.

➡️ There are many signs leading you to the arena so despite the crowd, don’t worry about getting lost. Else, ask the officers on duty and they will be happy to guide you to the right path! 😎

3. Time to arrive ⏰

I chose to reach Shi Fen (十分) near 4-5pm, just nice for me to catch a good spot right at the front of the lantern arena. If you would like to visit scenic places eg. Shifen Waterfall, Shifen Old Street, suggest you to come earlier so you have time to walk around! 👍🏻

4. Other tips and tricks 💁🏻‍♀️

- Take a picture of the train departure schedule once you reach Shi Fen (so you know when is a good time to start walking back from the lantern arena) 🚍

- There are many rounds of putting up the sky lanterns, but I would reccomend you to just stay for 2 rounds. They all look the same, so once you have admired enough, took all your photographs and videos, then hurry leave and catch the train/shuttle bus!🏃🏻‍♂️

- Bring an umbrella/rain jacket! ☔️ Winter period has a higher chance of rain, and as the event is held at an open area it would still go ahead as long as it’s just drizzle, and not a heavy rain.
