Nursing School Tips and Tricks

Did you know writing in color helps you strengthen connections to concepts you’re studying? Color coded notes stimulates your brain and helps you remember the topics by creating a vibrant mental image that enhances memory.

I am currently in Nurse Practitioner school but I used these same study tips in nursing school. Going to put them below!

1. Use your resources!

I cannot stress this enough. I always went through the PowerPoints provided, then utilized my book to further expand on those topics. Typically the teachers will use the PowerPoints as a guide. Pay attention to the bolded, bigger sections. Then go to your book and write down what makes this disease/topic different from others.

2. Knowing how to not over study

All the information in your PowerPoints and textbooks is so important. But the most important to know? How to differentiate. I remember and still struggle with wanting to write ALL the details. All the details end up being too much and I don’t retain as much. I learned that I do better on tests and in clinical if I learn ONLY the things that are unique to that topic. What stands out? What is present that you don’t see in other things? Treatment? Signs and symptoms? Diagnosis? Assessment?

3. Take breaks when studying

Sitting ALL DAY won’t help you. Make sure you take a break to get movement, eat, workout. Give your brain a break so it will work at full capacity for you. I promise you will retain more!

4. Concept maps are annoying in school when they are graded…. But they HELP.

If you’re really struggling with a disease process or medication, make a concept map. Your brain LOVES seeing connections and studying something other than notes is sometimes very helpful. Make a pathway to be able to visualize the process!
