I’m learning how to sew myself and wanted to start with something simple. So, I decided to make a scrunchie, well…. 15 of them actually (!) for a few friends.

1. Start by cutting the length of scrunchie you want. The length and width you choose will determine the thickness and fullness of your scrunchie. For mine, I did a width of 4 inches and length of 40 inches.

2. Iron your fabric!

3. Fold in half with the “right” or the pieces you want on the outside touching each other. Sew with a quarter inch seam allowance and start sewing about 1.5-2 inches from the top and bottom.

4. Use a safety pin to attach to one end of your fabric and use it to push it through to the other side.

5. Once your fabric has the right side out, take the ends and sew them together with the right sides facing again. This will be a little tough and might feel off, but when you pull your fabric tight, it will look like a scrunchie with a hole in it.

6. Cut your elastic to the length you want - I used roughly 10 inches.

7. I made sure the elastic was smooth all the way through and sewed the edges of the elastic together before tying a knot.

8. I pulled the fabric tight and sewed the opening closed. Rearranged the fabric all around the elastic, and you have yourself a scrunchie!

9. Repeat! ☺️
