Books with Baba Nyonya Representation

Hello 💕

I have love hate relationship with this duology but trust me, the first book in this duology is THE book of my life!

The Woman Who Breathed Two Worlds by Selina Siak Chin Yoke is the best book I've read about Baba Nyonya. The woman representation in this book is so powerful and uplifting. I love the main character who is strong and such a great mother who builds a solid household, raising her children, even making kueh business.

The traditional food, the Chinese Peranakan customs and the fear of losing one's identity due to migration are the main themes in the book. There wasn't a single page I read without shedding a tear. 🤧

The second book, When The Future Comes Too Soon, on the other hand made me fuming with anger. It's about how the main character's children show their weakness and basically causing the destruction of the household.

Overall, despite both of the books which are set in different era with the British and Japanese occupation, the correlation between these two books is pretty good and I can't recommend you enough, especially the first book. 🌹💕
