the word processed foods is thrown around, but do you really know what foods are processed?
processed foods: any raw foods that have been washed, cleaned, milled, cut, chopped, heated, pasteurized, blanched, cooked, canned, frozen, dried, dehydrated, mixed or packaged — anything done to them that alters their natural state
basically, if that’s not how it’s found when it’s growing.. it’s processed.
there are many healthy processed foods: chopped salads, frozen produce, greek yogurt, canned beans, canned veggies, ground lean meat, frozen seafood, etc.
processing can help the food last longer (less waste), make it more convenient to eat, and even make it more nutrient dense.
ULTRA processed foods: packaged foods that have been made by food companies using many manufactured ingredients, rather than actual foods. the ingredients have been extracted from foods. many of these foods can’t be recreated in your own kitchen.
usually these foods have a lot of ingredients and they also are hyper palatable (taste really good and makes us want to eat more). think like poptarts, pringles, sugary cereals, reese’s, icecream drumstick, hot cheetos, etc. these foods also arent very filling for the amount of calories they are, and dont have many nutrients.
you can still eat these foods in moderation, but you want the main focus of your diet to be whole foods or nutrient dense foods!
