I find this translation of this verse to be so beautiful that it made me cry. When we get a true understanding of God’s love, how can we ever consider our will above His? How can His love not organically produce the fruit of love and obedience?

2nd Corinthians 5:14-15 in the New King James translation says that the love of Jesus “compels us” (also translated “constrains us” in other translations.

This passage explains that His love compels us to live for Him now, instead of ourselves - “Who died for us and was raised again.”

Because of His love for us and our love for Him, which pours out of us willingly becoming the governing influence which controls our life. We are compelled to make HIS will the rule of our lives - and HIS glory the goal for every single thing we do - or don’t do.

The word “compel” often has a negative association with “force” or “coercion” - but here it’s meaning here positive. Even where it is translated “constrain” it is clearly a picture of a love so strong it literally will hold us back from sin. And the more we love Him, the more it holds us back. That’s why Jesus confidently declares that if we love Him we will keep His commands, instructions - His Word.

It’s not the fear of consequences or even an expectation of reward that motivates us, but the love of Jesus shown clearly in loving us so much that He was willing to die for us that inspires us to love Him back with our life - which is all we have to give to Him.

Whether compelled or constrained, this statement paints a picture of an An awareness so deep that it inspires an overwhelming appreciation so crystal clear of Jesus - taking upon Himself what we deserved - to give us what we do not deserve.

Jesus said: “If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands.” John‬ ‭14‬:‭15‬
