Firstly, congrats on landing a new job! It’s not easy so give yourself a Pat on your back! 👏🏻

Now here comes the harder part - fitting in/settling in…

So, how do you do it?🤔

It’s tough. No doubt.

But here are 3 things that kept me ‘sane’ whilst transitioning:

1. Be kind to yourself

This is something I’m still working on! It’s a journey. Being kind to yourself basically means giving yourself that space to “fail” and IT IS OKAY. For example, when I moved from a full-time performing job to a full-time office job, I didn’t realise how tired I would be. Physically especially! and mentally and emotionally and everything-ally. I would catch myself thinking “eh I can’t do this la, this is too tiring.” and things like “sighs everyone can, and I cannot. I’m not cut out for this.”; putting myself down, comparing myself etc. and this is where being kind to myself comes in - I needed to actively remind myself that no one at my work place came from a job like mine and switched over so it is natural to feel incompetent and extremely fatigued suddenly. There’s so much to get used to and I’m no superwoman so IT IS OKAY. I just need a bit of time to adjust! So to my friends, if you’re having a hard time settling in/fitting in/getting used to things, GIVE YOURSELF SOME TIME⏱

2. Have a routine

Yesssssssss, have a routine! For me, I started a new habit of sleeping before 12 midnight every work day. And lunch, I’ll try to have it between 12-1pm everyday at my favourite store which is just downstairs on level 2 of my work building. And if they’re not open, then I’ll have the hummus sandwich next door to that little eatery. Once I followed this routine, I felt less anxious about having to think of these things? I don’t know if that makes sense to you but I felt a little more stable because I had some structure in this high anxiety phase in my life. I also prepped my clothes for the week so I wouldn’t have to rush in the morning or be late for work. I always like to turn up at least 15mins earlier so I’m in a calmer state of mind before the day begins. You can try this out too! 💪🏻

3. Reward yourself at work

What did I do? Lol the simplest thing - I ate. I snacked. Healthily of course. Nuts, biscuits, tea lots of tea! smoothies. Yup. I gained weight😅 but that’s okay. Because mental well-being > obsessing about my weight. I snacked to make myself happy and it worked. It got me through very tough days! Will I lose the weight? I don’t know. But I won’t force myself and it will be about cultivating good habits again that do not require eating!

If there’s anything else that you’ve tried that helped you get through your transition period, let me know!!! Sharing is always welcomed 🤗🥰

With love,

Arie
