VOL 01 #FYIS — Modern Farmhouse Style 💭

I'll be starting this series called Find Your Interior Style #FYIS to introduce the different types of Interior design styles that exist — hopefully this is useful for homeowners who are looking to create / work towards a certain design style and direction, and people who are not really sure what each design style really means.

In today's post we'll start with the Modern Farmhouse look, which is esentially a modernised version of a western farmhouse or a cottage style look. The main colour & material palette for this style is mostly white & wood, where you can alternate between having wood cabinets + white countertops or white cabinets + wood top.

Apart from the colour theme, there are certain elements that are a must-have in this design style:

1. The use of wood in floorings and/or cabinetry.

2. Gold or brass fittings to elevate the look (Brass gives off a more 'vintage' vibe, while Gold is more modern)

3. A bright & airy feel in the space, with the use of mostly white & wood tones.

4. Use of statement pendant lights (This can be done in the Living room, Dining room or in the Kitchen).

5. Shaker-style cabinets for cabinetry detailing* — This gives it a very 'farmhouse' look!

6. Subway tiles are the most basic backsplash look you can use to achieve this style. But you may use white/neutral tiles with shade variations, or even marble-looking quartz for a incorporation of a luxe and a more modernised look.

In this modern farmhouse style, you can choose between gold, black or brass fittings to elevate the space. Ideally, having black accents (in lightings, fittings or decor) will be useful in injecting some charm & a more modernised feel.

What I love about this style is that it is very flexible and you're able to 'control' or limit how much 'farmhouse' look you want to bring to the space: Eg. If you prefer a more rustic/vintage look, use brass fittings and rustic looking wood & add wooden beams on your ceilings. If you prefer a more modernised look, use gold fittings and lighter oak wood with marble accents.
