Iāve had my starter for almost 2 weeks now and hereās what Iāve learnedā¦
You donāt have to use organic flour, while Iām sure thatās a must for a lot of people Iāve been using the King Arthur all purpose flour and it has worked great so far!
You donāt need to start from scratch, there are a ton of starters you can order online. My mother in law gifted me the King Arthur sourdough starter for Christmas and it has been the easiest for me to use.
I havenāt quite mastered how to leave starter in the fridgeā¦ so Iāve been feeding everyday. This will cost me more money but until I figure out how to store starter in the fridge this will be what I have to do!
Itās a learning experience, Iāve compared my starter to my toddlerā¦ it needs almost constant attention and fed sometimes twice a day! Over the last 2 weeks I thought I ruined it a few times but itās bounced back beautifully and Iāve learned from my mistakes.
Having the right tools is definitely a must but you donāt need the fanciest equipment. I donāt have a stand-mixer or any fancy baking gadgets. I ordered a bread making kit on Amazon for $55, my starter is in a 1 gal mason jar from target that was $20 and I have a kitchen scale that my husband bought a year ago for $10 at Walmart.
This is a very low cost way to ensure youāre eating non-processed bread at home. While it is time consuming, it is cheaper than buying bread once a week!
