I realise there isn’t much post on how to identify red flags in friendship so here’s my 5 cents thoughts and getaway after dropping a toxic friendship that happened recently.

Friendships are vital in our lives, but sometimes we encounter warning signs of toxic dynamics. It's crucial to identify these signs early on to protect our well-being and maintain healthy relationships. Let's delve into commonly overlooked red flags in friendships:

1. Lack of presence and inclusion:

When a friend consistently ignores your presence or excludes you from plans, it's a clear red flag. Feeling invisible or sidelined is disheartening. Healthy friendships are built on mutual respect and consideration, where everyone feels valued and included.

2. Selective anger and resentment:

If a friend frequently directs their anger and resentment solely towards you, it's concerning. Healthy friendships involve open communication and conflict resolution without singling out one person. Consistently being the target of their anger creates an unhealthy and imbalanced dynamic.

3. Walking on eggshells:

Feeling the need to constantly tiptoe around a friend is emotionally draining. If innocent comments or actions might trigger their anger or disappointment, it's a sign of an unhealthy friendship. True friends provide a safe space where you can be yourself without fear of judgment or punishment.

4. Jealousy and resentment towards your success:

Genuine friends celebrate each other's achievements and support one another's aspirations. However, if a friend consistently displays jealousy, diminishes your accomplishments, or undermines your success, it's a significant red flag. Healthy friendships thrive on mutual support and encouragement, not competition or envy.

5. Talking negatively about you to others:

In healthy friendships, trust and loyalty are paramount. A true friend would never engage in conversations where they discuss your personal matters or spread gossip about you behind your back. They respect your privacy and understand the importance of keeping your shared experiences and secrets confidential. If you discover that a friend has been trashing or badmouthing you to others, it is a significant red flag. It undermines the trust and mutual respect necessary for a healthy friendship. Real friends have your back and will address any concerns or conflicts directly with you, rather than resorting to negative discussions with others.

Although it can be difficult to let go of long-term friendships, prioritizing your well-being is crucial. Ending toxic friendships creates space for healthier relationships. Surround yourself with friends who uplift you, celebrate your successes, and genuinely care about your happiness. By cultivating positive and supportive friendships, you'll create an environment where personal growth and mutual fulfillment can flourish. So if you experience any of these signs, it's time to consider ending those friendships.
