Establishing a sensory routine after school can be a great way to help children transition from the school environment to home. Here is a suggested routine that incorporates various activities in order to help your kiddo regulate after a busy sensory day:

1. Wind down time: School can be a big sensory experience for a child so it is important to create room for wind down time! Find a quiet space and have them engage in low stimulating activities such as reading a book, listening to calming music, coloring, and building with blocks.

2. Snack break: Provide snacks that include crunchy foods like apples, carrots, or popcorn. Crunchy foods can provide calming sensory feedback through chewing.

3. Movement break: Encourage physical activity to help with whole body regulating. Activities such as jumping, crawling, dancing, or pushing/pulling heavy objects are great to target the proprioceptive system, which is our body’s naturally regulating sense!

4. Tactile play: Set up a sensory bin with materials such as rice, beans, sand, or water beads. Tactile input can provide regulation to our nervous system through repetitive motions, soothing texture, and focused engagement.

5. Social play: Allow for some time for you, siblings, or friends to engage in games or activities that incorporate cooperative skills and social interactions. Social play leads to feelings of joy and laughter, resulting in increased mood, relaxation, and expression of emotions.
