To create the illusion of taller ceilings, you want to focus on design tactics that create depth, draw the eye up, and fill space. My ceilings are only 8ft, so I have used these methods in every room in my house!

One of the most impactful ways to make your room feel bigger is by hanging your curtains high and wide. This will instantly make your space feel larger, while not hanging your curtains properly can actually make your room feel smaller. You want to hang your curtain rod a few inches below the ceiling, and 12-18 inches from edge of the window.

Being savvy with your decor placement can make a huge impact to your space. Anywhere I could take something up to the ceiling, I did! From the plates in my kitchen, to the art on my walls, I made sure I had what I needed to hang it as tall as I could. This is not only a unique way to decorate, it draws the eye up, creating the look of higher ceilings.

Make sure to also fill dead space. Adding the pots and planters above my built ins created much needed depth, and makes the room feel both larger than it is, while also still feeling cozy. You could do this by adding thrifted baskets up above your kitchen cabinets, or vases above a hutch.

A monochromatic paint color keeps your eyes from discerning where the wall ends and ceiling begins. I like to use light colors in rooms with more natural light, and deep cozy colors for darker rooms.

Pay attention to the scale your furniture. For big items like couches, choose ones that are low profile with clean lines. These pieces naturally take up a lot of space because their size, but buying ones that are more minimal, it keeps them from overwhelming your space.

I personally love a low ceiling, but by incorporating these design tricks, my home feels open, cozy & inviting!
