I moved in with my husband and his parents 4 months before our wedding to save money, pay off debt and put everything else towards our wedding.
Here’s our current income:
Gross Monthly Income: $3,623.48
Net Monthly Income (minus taxes, health insurance and 401k contribution): $2,462.50
My husband is currently enrolled full-time in a Doctorate program. Which means I am our only source of income. Sucks for the short term, but keeping our eyes on the prize!
Our current monthly costs:
My student loans: $120
My car payment : $205
Phone Bills: $130
Rent to his parents: $350
Gas for his commute to school: $500
My gas (I work from home): $100
Car insurance: $270
My personal trainer and both our gym memberships (guilty pleasure cost): $270
Tithe to our church: $360
The total: $2,305
Our grand total of what we have to either save, spend, or co-pay stuff when we have dentists or doctor’s appointments:
A WHOPPING $157.50
Now don’t get me wrong it could be a lot worse, it was for me prior when I lived alone. (Which is why I had 15k in credit card debt).
Now we have no credit card debt, but I have about 10k in student loans and he has about 50k and climbing for student loans 😂
Finances are the number one reason for divorce which is why I got a higher paying job with great benefits when we got married. This allowed us to save about $10k in the 4 months we had leading up to C starting school.
I also have a few side gigs, babysitting, pet sitting etc. to bring in extra money every couple of months but regardless adulting is scary 👍🏻
This is why we still live with the in-laws, we didn’t want to backslide into debt. While there are struggles living with them, in-laws aren’t the number one reason for divorce. Finances are.
