Catch the Bioluminescent Waves in San Diego!

One of the most beautiful and fascinating nature events to witness in Southern California (San Diego and (Los Angeles) are the neon blue, bioluminescent waves that are a result of the “Red Tide.” This natural occurrence only happens for a short window, usually sometime between April through October. Check local news and social media for updates and head out to the ocean when it is confirmed it’ll be time!

During the day, you’ll notice that the water is a reddish/brown color, which is where the term “red tide” comes from. This is caused by an over abundance of bioluminescent plankton in the water at one time.

At night, the plankton “tumble” in the water, which causes the illusion of a neon blue light flickering.

Observing this phenomenon from the beach is a fascinating sight. It is also extra cool when you see surfers catching waves, with a neon blue trail behind them.

It is very difficult to take good quality photos on an average smartphone camera, so please take my word for it and witness it in person!
