Why i wrote my will at 24 yrs old! 📃

Making plans in preparation of your death is no longer uncommon, in fact its actually encouraged. Having wills, LPA & making funeral arrangement makes things easier for loved ones in the event that one passes. There are many things that one can do but i'll be sharing about the two more common & arguably the most important ones

1. Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) ✍️

This means to appoint someone (Donee) to make decisions/act on behalf of someone if he/she loses mental capacity one day.

For example, if someone becomes brain dead (vegetable) one day & is surviving on life support, the LPA can decide to turn off the machine & let the person go.

The Donee does not have to be a spouse or family member, the person just has to be 21 years of age & is appointed by the Donor. I'm currently in the process of it too.

This is a common practice as people age because the risk of getting into serious accidents such as strokes & heart attacks are higher. Other people who might do this would be first responders, military personnel or anyone in a high risk job.

2. Last Will & Testament 📃

A last will is a legal document that communicates a persons final wishes pertaining to their assets.

Wills are important as assets are involved. You've seen shows or heard of real life cases where families fight or sue each other because of the unsettled assets of a passed family member.

Anyone can write a will, but do note that marriage override wills so if you have written one before you got married, you need to redo it ☝🏻

In SG, you don't have to get a lawyer to help draft your will. But you should if you have highly complex distributions of assets. There are will writing services offered by non lawyers as well.
